Dunkeld, situated on the banks of the Castlereagh reservoir is perhaps the most picturesque tea estate in Sri Lanka. The estate is between an elevation of 4000 and 5000 feet and the nearest town is Hatton, 20 km away. Colombo is a distance of 140km. Dunkeld comprises of 220 hectares or 550 acres of high grown Ceylon tea, annually producing about 350,000 kgs.
The Alliance Tea Company of Ceylon managed by M/s Whittalls were the original owners of Dunkeld estate. In 1948 Mr. B. H. Williams purchased the property and later, M/s Tillyrie Tea Company managed Dunkeld. In 1952 the factory was relocated further uphill when the valley was flooded for a hydro electric dam. Visit our History of Ceylon Tea site to learn more about this great industry.
